MALLORCA (MAJORCA)
The three S’s – sun, sand and sea are the major attractions of the beautiful island of Mallorca. Many of the rich and famous have homes on the island, and the island is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Europe.
The largest town and capital of the island is Palma De Mallorca. Located on the south side of the island on a bay which is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, this quaint town houses most of Mallorca’s local population. The beautifully restored cathedral of Palma is one of the major tourist attractions here, along with its narrow old streets and its flashy new stores and shopping centres.
The beaches of the north and east coasts are among the best in this area, though most of them have been overrun by resorts and hotel chains. There is a mountain range which runs parallel to the northwest coast and adds to the spectacular vistas of Mallorca.
Visitor Suggestions:
Must do:
A glass bottom boat trip will allow you to see some of the varied aquatic life of the island.
Drive into the centre of this island, away from the coast. The prices will fall, the places will be quieter and you will get a glimpse of the true local culture.
How to spend your time: Sit on the beach and soak in the sun – after all this is what this place is famous for. If you want to get away from the crowds, take the local bus and go to beaches which are further away from the capital.
When to visit Mallorca:
All year round the average temperature at Mallorca range is about 21’C. There is sunshine almost all the year round; hence any time is a good time to visit. Yet if you are looking for a really great time to go, then early spring is just right. The flowers are out, the fiesta season is just about to begin and the sun is not too hot. The prices have not reached the heights of the peak season, which is from mid-June till mid-September.
How to get there:
With the landing of the first charter flight in 1950, Mallorca was suddenly more accessible to the throngs of tourist who were looking for a place to get away from it all. Today Palma Airport (Son Sant Joan airport) lies eight kilometres from Palma and many airlines fly to this airport. In 2010 Palma Airport was the 16th busiest in Europe in terms of passengers.
