LISBON
Lisbon is one the most beautiful capital cities in Europe, and it manages to retain its unique identity and the feeling that it is set apart from the rest of Europe. The unusual streets of this lovely city, the cathedrals and the monasteries, the quiet tree-filled streets, the bright yellow trams, all these are part of the quiet splendour that is Lisbon.
Built on seven cities – Lisbon faces the
Atlantic Ocean and even though the ambience is very young, it carries within it centuries of Portuguese history.
There is so much that you can do in Lisbon. You can sit in one of the roadside cafes, enjoying some wine and fresh homemade bread and listen to music in the background, take a tram around the city or take a sightseeing bus tour and visit the many cathedrals and monuments of Lisbon.
Visitor Suggestions:
Music: Lisboas are very fond of music, and you will find music in every corner and around all the cafes and restaurants. At Bairro Alto there are many restaurants and bars which have music of all genres playing all evening and often till dawn.
Must Visit: Sintra, very close to Lisbon is worth a visit. Beautiful beaches and quaint fishing villages are all part of the scenery here.
Must See: Cristo Rei – this 100 metres tall statue of Christ stands guard over the city. Access is by ferry, bus, and then take the lift to reach the top and get breath-taking views of the city
When to Visit: Lisbon has a mild Mediterranean climate, although it can be very hot in July and August. Lisbon is a year-round destination, and is often a good escape in the winter months, when it is much warmer than most of Europe. The Gulf Stream is responsible for the mild winters and the warm waters on the beach. During winter, spring and autumn you may occasionally need jackets, since there can be strong winds from the ocean.
How to get there:
Lisbon’s main airport is the Aeroporto Da Portela, located to the north of Lisbon (about 20 minutes by bus from the centre of Lisbon). Lisbon is now a popular weekend break destination, and many of the low cost airlines operate routes to Lisbon Airport.
