ITALY

There is so much that Italy stands for – it has some of the world’s best paintings and sculptures, it houses two independent states within it, trendy fashion considers Milan to be it’s birthplace, and it has the largest number of Unesco’s heritage sites in this world.

If you are a history buff, then just wandering around Rome can keep you enthralled for days on end. There is so much to see and do in this city itself that you need not travel beyond it.

You can go skiing in the Alps or take a trek around the Dolomites. If you are looking for historic buildings, art and beautiful scenery then Florence is recommended.

For spectacular coastline the Amalfi coast to the south of Naples (right) has some of the most spectacular coastline views in Europe.

Visitor suggestions:

Must see:

Rome: A visit to the Vatican is compulsory on any visitor’s agenda. The Sistine Chapel, Pieta in all her glory and the seat of one the world’s major religions.

Pompeii (near Naples): The site of the eruption of the Mount Vesuvias volcano in 79AD.

Venice: Venice is the location favoured by coupes looking for a romantic holiday in the city which is built on water.

Pisa: A visit to Pisa would not be complete without seeing the famouse leaning tower.

Must eat:  Apart from the pizzas, do sample all the different types of local cuisines, and you cannot go back without tasting Italian ice-cream.

Must visit: Italian vineyards are not only great places to sample their wines, but are also very beautiful places to visit.

When to go:

This is totally dependent on why you are going there. If you are planning to take a skiing holiday then winter is your best option.  It is a land of sunny, mild weather, but the mountains can be very cold, and in some places the summer can be hot and humid.

Airports:

With so many large cities in Italy, there are many international airports including Rome, Milan, Naples and Florence. These are serviced by almost all the major airlines.

Internally the best way to travel is either by road or by taking the Italian train service.

Most of the budget airlines offer low cost flights to Italy with the best deals offered outside the busy holiday period of May-September.
